RECOGNIZE YOUR NEW RELATIONSHIP

List some of the things that chance when you get a new job.

YOU DIED TO SIN

Romans 6:1-11

You are linked to Jesus

Read Romans 6:1-5

Romans 5 leaves no doubt that through the work of Christ a victory has been won for all people.  Righteousness is ours.  What temptation can Satan bring to people who understand this gift of God?

God says that in our baptisms we died to sin.  What would the difference be if God had said that in our baptisms we went in a coma to sin or fell asleep to sin or zoned out to sin?

Many who bear the name “Christian” teach that baptism doesn’t actually do anything spiritual; it just is a picture of something spiritual.  What phrases in this section demonstrate that baptism actually does something?  (“united with” is, literally, “grown together”)

If our sinful flesh says to us, “You’re forgiven.  Why not sin!” what truths from this section can you use to respond?

Read Romans 6:6-11

Explain the connection between the death of our body of sin and the fact that we no longer are serving sin as a slave.

Often we might think of Jesus only as one who has affected our past—he has taken away our sins.  In what way has Jesus changed every day of our future?

SERVE YOUR NEW MASTER

Romans 6:12-14

Don’t listen to a dead boss

Read Romans 6:12-14

From where do evil desires come?  What attitude does God encourage us to have toward those evil desires?

You are in a serious car accident.  The paramedic tells you that you will die.  You go unconscious.  You are in a coma for three weeks.  A doctor with a brand new medical procedure flies in from the east coast.  His efforts succeed.  You wake up and fully recover.  How do you think your attitude toward life would change?  How is this example connected with verse 13?

REJOICE IN YOUR NEW FUTURE

Romans 6:15-23

The curse of sin reversed

Read Romans 6:15-19

In the first part of Romans 6, Paul imagines the evil thought, “The more I sin, the more God will be able to love me.”  Having explained that we have died to sin, he adds that we are no longer under the threats of the law.  Now Paul imagines the evil thought, “So if I’m not under the law’s threats—if I’m free—why not sin?”  Explain why such a person is in reality not free at all.

Why is it helpful for a Christian to think of sinning as living like a slave?

Read Romans 6:20-23

When we sin, we think that something good will happen as a result.  Describe a sin and explain the good that we think will follow.  When does it become obvious that we made a big mistake?

You’ve been set free from all that, because you’ve died with Christ, and those who have died have been declared innocent of all sin.  You are now servants of God and slaves of righteousness.  Why does God work so hard to do nothing more—but nothing less!—than to remind you of who you are?

Romans 6 deals with the question, “If God has forgiven me, why not sin all the more?”  How could you use verse 23 with someone who still insists on feeling this way?

How could you use verse 23 with someone who realizes that he has used God’s grace as a free pass to feel comfortable with sin?
